There are so many features to a birthday party that you can DIY! Save your party budget by learning how to make this simple high chair banner. There is a tutorial here for a ribbon high chair banner and the option of adding a paper pennant banner attached to it. It will look amazing and add such a nice touch to your kiddo’s birthday party!

Directions for a Ribbon High Chair Banner

  1. Gather some ribbon in your party’s color scheme. If you’re a crafter, raid your space to find a variety of colors that would work well with the theme. Aim for at least 3 different colors/shades. It is also nice for some variety in textures and widths. Grab some twine while you are getting the ribbon too! We’ll need something to hold it all together.

  2. Ge

t your crafting scissors and start cutting! Cut them in different lengths, about 6-8 inches in length. You can cut shorter or longer based on your preference.

  3. Cut a long piece of twine (at least 3 feet). Begin wrapping the ribbon around the twine in a “cow hitch knot”, see picture for a visual description. Wrap them in random order or complete a pattern if you’d like too.

Below you will find two examples of ribbon-only high chair banners that I’ve made. Keep reading for the option of adding a paper pennant to the ribbons.

Here’s an example of a high chair banner I made with just ribbon. This was for my son’s “Wild One” first birthday party. You will need one pack of this assortment ribbon which has both buffalo plaid ribbon and a plain burlap color, plain red ribbon, and twine.

Here is another ribbon-only high chair banner I made for my other son’s first birthday party. The theme was “Under the Sea”. That theme was so fun! The exact ribbons that I used are not all available, but here is what I recommend to make a look-a-like “Under the Sea” ribbon-only high chair banner: whale ribbon, blue polka dot ribbon, chevron ribbon, sparkly translucent turquoise ribbon, blue and white striped ribbon, blue and white checkered ribbon, and twine. Included in these links are a mixture of textures, widths, and a variety of different looking ribbons to make a magical banner! Remember, raid your house first before purchasing all of this ribbon. You will likely be able to find something that will match your party theme!

Directions for a Paper Pennants Banner

  1. Get some colorful cardstock in your party’s color schemes.

  2. Grab a ruler and measure out your pennants. The size is completely customizable and really you can make it how large or small you’d like. I’d recommend starting with 4 inch x 4 inch. You can always cut them down or experiment and cut them larger. Use the edge of one piece of cardstock to measure out 4 inches. Next, take your ruler and mark the halfway point on the edge of the 4 inch side you just measured. There will be 2 inches on each side. Take your ruler and measure 4 inches to make the “point” of your pennant. Next, to make the sides straight, take your ruler from the point of the pennant and make a straight line towards one end of the 4 inch line at the top of the paper. Repeat for the other side.

OR grab my free pennant printable. All you need to do is print and cut! If you’re hosting a first birthday party, here is a free “one” printable with the “O-N-E” printed on it.

3. Repeat the pennant design for each letter you need. Once you have enough pennants measured out, cut them out. I recommend this paper cutter. It makes cutting a breeze and ensures your edges are super straight. Caution: this may have your guests believing a professional made this. :)

4. Attach one letter sticker to each pennant for the word you are spelling out.

5. Take a hole puncher and punch one hole in each top corner.

6. Take some twine (you already have some left from the ribbon banner) and weave the twine in and out throughout the holes. You are done!

You can attach this to your ribbon banner by using glue dots. This is my favorite brand and I use them for everything! Attach your ribbon banner with the pennants to your high chair with clear packing tape. Get the heavy duty for this one! I hope you enjoy making this and happy party planning friends!
